BIRD WATCHING and WILD PLANTS

Bird watching

For bird watching, the Algarve has great possibilities. Especially in the salinas (salt pans) on the coast and in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one can observe wading birds throughout the year. There also are many flamingoes along the coast and even from the veranda of the apartment you can often see groups of about 50 animals foraging. Autumn is a very good time for migrating birds and especially birds of prey. During the days with an unfavorable wind, they can be seen in large numbers at Cabo São Vicente, waiting for favorable winds to cross over to Africa. In winter in the lagoons and lakes around the eastern Algarve and Faro you can see large numbers of ducks and other waterfowl. Famous in these areas is the rare tropical-looking purple gallinule. You might even see five in one day. We are also birdwatchers and we can tell you exactly where you should go.

Wild plants

The Algarve is one of the richest wild plants areas in Europe. This is mainly due to the large limestone areas. In fact on lime the species richness is much greater than on neutral and acidic soil.

The best time to see wild flowers is in March / April when the Algarve is in bloom. Much farmland in the limestone area (Barrocal) lies fallow and is a sea of flowers at that time. Along roads and trails we find species of orchids. In March / April the weather is very good, with pleasant temperatures. There is the occasional rain shower, but the sun usually comes out directly after. So great weather for walking through the fields, along streams, rivers, hills, mountains and cliffs. We often arrange nature walks for groups and are well acquainted with many beautiful trails. For interested enthusiasts, we can set up a program.
